Good evening Al, I tried to reply to your post, but some sort of firewall, calling itself Sucuri, was stopping me I saw a post earlier where you wanted to know about somebody's BUM and as Lurch replied I assumed it was meant for him.

My BUM arrived a couple of weeks ago, and I haven't used it yet as I've been scared of breaking something. But I will have a play with my BUM this weekend, and hope I don't make an ARSE of things. In the meantime it sits at the front right corner of the plinth. It looks quite natty there, and as my deck doesn't have any logo's on it, I may keep it there

You can't be too careful with an unfamiliar BUM, it can have all sorts of diseases. So yes, I took precautions.

    Hi Steve,

As you may have read I have been checking the setup of my cartridges. My opinion now is that the BUM guage or similar is a good starting point to get the head shell/cartridge level/parallel with the record surface, but there is no guarantee the stylus is perfectly aligned on the cantilever so it may be slightly out.

After using the BUM I would check that the stylus is absolutely vertical in the groove(azimuth), and that you are getting equal signal level from each channel by using a HiFi set up record that has a 300hz track, you can either do this by listening and each channel should sound identical, if one is slightly louder then you need to adjust the headshell if it has an azimuth adjustment grub screw and change the cartridge angle one way or the other very slightly. I used a dB meter I down loaded onto my mobile phone to measure each channel of the 300hz test track, until I got them exactly the same, it need very little to sound quite off, but when it was spot on then it made a big impact to the definition, soundstage and detail.

Have fun, it is worth it

By the way I am going to try and do what I promised you best week.
Listening is the act of aural discrimination and dissemination of sound, and accepting you get it wrong sometimes.

Analog Inputs: Pro-Ject Signature 10 TT & arm, Benz Micro LP-S, Michel Cusis MC, Goldring 2500 and Ortofon Rondo Blue cartridges, Hitachi FT5500 mk2 Tuner

Hi Adrian, yes, I had read with interest your post about using a dB meter app for azimuth adjustments, and had intended to try this, but (a) there doesn't seem to be provision for this adjustment with my arm - it is Rega-derived, but the headshell , if you can call it that, is definitely not Rega. And (b) I have no test records, just a few mono recordings which wouldn't be any use I suppose.

Can you recommend a test record? I might put a want ad on here. Or go on Amazon if they're not silly money.

Perhaps this will also help me set the correct anti-bias adjustment, as I moved it (just a sliding button) and like the silly sod I am, I can't remember where it used be set

    Also, what's the app called?

Cheers Adrian, and no rush with that other thing, get yourselves well first

Bias should be set around 50% of tracking weight & 2/3 max.
With fixed headshell arms the OL cartridge enabler (a 1mm thick soft material) is ideal for the minor angular adjustments needed for azimuth. Once fitted it's a simple case of changing the tightness of the cartridge bolts as there's around 0.5mm of 'crush' in the small pad available to tweak the stylus angle.
