    Given the specified dynamic range (84dB), the number of bits (N) can be calculated from:

    Dynamic range(dB) = 6.021*N - 1.763

    Thus N = 13.66. So call it 14 bit in round numbers.

    Years ago, when I was showing an interest in CDPs, I heard a Philips CDP-101, which considering the concept was jointly developed by Philios and Sony, would probably have had a similar sound. It wasn't that good, especially compared to vinyl replay, so I awaited the Philips 104 machine - which was (just about) acceptable.

    I ought to add I heard a Philips 100, which was awful!
