    Default Speaker Repairs / Refurbishment

My very, very old pair of Snell Js have recently developed some distortion in one of the speakers. It happened a while back in the other speaker (I think) but it eventually went away.

But the new problem has become really annoying lately, it spoils nearly everything I play.

So unless there is an easy fix then I want to get them repaired/refurbished, particularly as the cabinets look pretty awful aesthetically and they are well overdue some TLC.

Has anyone got any suggestions for who could do this for me? I have looked inside and the crossovers look way too complicated for me to mess about with, which is why I would prefer a professional to work on them (and to diagnose what is causing the distortion).

I am based in the north west.

    Cheers.

Have a chat with Paul Coupe at Reference Fidelity Components, sounds like the sort of job he'd take on.

It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Not sure of any where near Manchester, but I've heard that Wembley Loudspeaker company are good at this. Depends if you think it's worth the effort and costs of delivery each way. Worth talking to the guys there. If it's just the drive units which you wanted repaired they might suggest taking them out, and only sending those down, otherwise sending the whole speaker down would be more expensive.

Anyway, a phone call to these guys might give you some ideas of options.

PS: a short term fix might be to turn the speakers upside down. Sometimes the driver suspension "goes" resulting in a rasping noise on some notes. If the speakers work when turned up on end, then you could turn the drive unit inside the cabinet round, to see if you can get another few years out of it. Also, just check for loose wires - could be something simple - but maybe more serious work really is needed.

I'd highly recommend Paul as well. He goes into every detail of a refurbishment (whether you understand it or not ). Great VFM.

I wouldn't risk sending them to Wembley.

    +2 for Paul Coupe.

Did a great job on the external crossovers for my Tannoys, which I have to admit are hidden behind the speakers due to lack of space, they deserve to be seen
