“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Warmest day of the year so far, 22C this afternoon. Got lawn sprinkler on this evening, ahead of it getting second mowing in 2 weeks tomorrow. Any sign of a hosepipe ban yet?

Yeah, the grass and hedges are cut now. Looks decent enough, but the lawns have loads of small bumps and dips. I'll have to doctor those.

There's ivy growing out of control on an adjacent wall. Not mine, but if I don't chop it down nobody else will bother. I weed killered it a couple of days ago, so after it's chopped down the roots will die now.

Bit of ivy's ok, but it tends to go a bit mental when your back is turned. Then it leaves a right old mess on the walls. Strangely, when we got our first house in 1983 I bought a potted ivy plant, and in spite of my best efforts it died

I know. It was invading my garden from all sides for years. About five years ago I got fed up and cut down and burned all I could reach, then poisoned the rest even though it wasn't mine. Lazy neighbours didn't say anything.
