I was brought up CofE and sang in the village church choir every Sunday. I haven't believed in God since my early teens at the latest.

I believe that religion came from Man's fear of death and the beyond and a desire to believe in a life after death, combined with the machinations of those who sought to seek advantage of these fears for their own gain.

HOWEVER, I also believe that our great country was built on Christian values and morals, and I have no time for rabid atheists and liberals who seek to take away the rights of Christians to express their views, or put other religions on an equal footing in this country. They are the people who risk damaging the moral fabric of our (once) great nation, not Christians. You don't have to believe in God to believe in the righteousness of (most of) Christian morality.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Some insightful comments there, guys, However, let's not turn this thread into a religious debate. It exists simply for folks to offer their heartfelt best wishes and intentions, religious or otherwise, to everyone at this very difficult time, so please respect that. Therefore if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing. Ta

...and perhaps as punishment for how, for decades, man has been thoughtlessly and systematically destroying the planet! Look how, since the start of this outbreak, levels of pollution and carbon emissions, etc, have fallen rapidly, how air quality has improved and wildlife are thriving.

I am now old enough to have been with a lot of people at their time of passing, Both people who believed and tried to follow God and Christ and those who spent their lives rejecting any kind of relationship with God.
In the end every single one has asked me to pray with them or over them. Go figure huh? So many times the same comments "I prayed but God didn't let my wife or husband live", God owes us nothing!
He created us and a perfect world for us. He saw we could not live a life with out sin, and sacrificed his only son to pay for our sins that separate us from him.
Our wants, needs and desires rarely have anything to do with Gods will but, when it dose those prayers do get answered. We are all loved by God and he often uses even very flawed people to do his will on Earth.
I believe he sometime dose this to make a point. A murderer turns around and leads people to God, seeks to help the family of the person he took from them. Our church spends a lot of resources going to prisons to bring people back to God. In the End of all of our lives what matters is are you moving closer to God or further away ? And He will ask "Do I know You"? and "what have you done to make me known"?

If you think God is not near us all the time and close by Just pray and ask him to work through you to do his will.
Before to long you will be called on maybe to help someone. Some one may invite you to a event or some life changing thing.
Because you are not putting any of your own conditions on it.
Giving up ones own self , having faith ,wanting God to show up in your life ,giving up ones own wants is key. Until you've done this you really don't know anything.
Another thing is blaming God for pain or suffering caused by us people. He gave us free will . Don't blame God for the sins of the world he gave everyone a choice and no one is guaranteed another day of life, each day is a gift .
He also gives us Mercy and Grace we can not earn, but must seek.

I have never seen die an atheist yet, a lot happens in your heart when you know you probably won't live to see the next sunrise.
Just food for thought. One of our pastors who is going to China and expets to die there.
