Yes. If you're honest and competent customers will flock to you. There's no place for sentiment in business but that's not the same as honesty.

+1 I agree 100% Marco, that is not the way I could ever do business - admittedly more money can be made going down the morally bankrupt route, at least short term. But not if you're in it for the long haul, and not if you actually give a shit about the people you share this planet with.

I do have a "pricing policy" - conspicuously wealthy people do get to pay a bit more than my clearly skint customers (by which I mean that rich folk pay the same as everyone else, while people who haven't a pot to piss in get their work extra cheap, or sometimes I just charge them the brew they made me!

While this approach clearly won't make me a millionaire I feel that I gain in other ways. I know that if I see one of my customers in Asda I don't have to hide, and all my work comes from recommendations. Cheap and easy advertising, all you need is honesty and a sense of fair play

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Lol - that'll be why then I could afford to semi-retire at 43!

Basic honesty is always the best policy, but little 'white lies' sometimes also work!

We're completely on the same page here, mate! I've given loads of 'freebies' or discounts to unfortunate folks, and when I could, I've gone out of my way to help the elderly or downtrodden. In business (and in life) I'm a great believer in Karma, and therefore in 'What goes around, comes around'... In that respect, in a good way, I've been rewarded many times!

That's why I've always sought to create a 'feel-good factor' with any business deal I've done, both for the customer and me. When closing a deal, BOTH should feel that they've done well out of it. Quite simply to survive, small businesses rely on repeat business, from an existing client base, (as well as continually generating new customers), and you certainly won't get repeat business from someone you've ripped off!

That's why unscrupulous sales 'get rich quick schemes' only work in the short-term, so you have to continually invent new ones, in order to make money... Me? I'd sooner work on the 'Do enough to earn a decent living' scheme, stay in business in the long term, and be able to sleep soundly at night.

As I've always said, true happiness and contentment with your 'lot' in life is always worth much more than money!
