“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

    Saabs were great.

The last one I had was a 9-3 Aero Convertible. Very fast, immense handling, the feel-good factor multiplied with the roof down. Sounded fantastic, loads of trick in it too.

Now you might have a few people who don't think racism is wrong or sexism is wrong, but they're not going to change their minds about it because they are harangued by some shrill, middle-class lefty who is so deluded with a sense of their own self importance that they think it is their calling to change the world.

And the rest of us are sick of being lectured about it. It's patronising and annoying.

And injustice, like the poor, will always be with us. The idea that you can somehow use legislation to create a perfect world with no injustice and where everyone is always pleasant to each other is risible. It's a childish fantasy and it does more harm than good. In fact it doesn't do any good at all.

Simply in terms of the latter, why so? If I didn't know better, I'd expect that sort of comment to have been uttered by a rather grumpy and unhappy person, disillusioned with life...

I don't know about you, but when I wake up every morning my goal is precisely that: to be nice to people, unless given a suitable excuse not to

So what's the downside then in folk being nice to each other...?

There are too many grumps (angry people) around these days with huge chips on their shoulders and wearing permanent scowls on their faces, so where possible I like to do my best to reverse that trend, and instead smile, especially when that's what I'm used to from those who inhabit 'my world'

Yup, Saabs ROCK! Or rather they used to... As a lover of quality 'proper' cars, it was a sad day when they went bust

There's no downside and it would be great if everyone was always nice to each other. But it's an impossible dream. Trying to force that outcome via legislation or haranguing people about it actually makes things worse. That was the point I was making.

I had a Saab 99 about forty years ago. Nicely built, but deadly dull. Swapped it for a TR7 from a guy at work, that was much more fun and surprisingly reliable.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Sure, I get that. However, as Grant said earlier, it's more about EDUCATING than legislating.

To make things better, what we need to do is put steps in place to change/modify our current culture, and EDUCATE people. from the ground roots up, to better (read as nicer, more considerate) human beings and parents, so that we start to BREED more people deserved of that title (a human being), rather than that of an animal (although that would often be an insult to animals) - and then lay down an infrastructure designed, where possible, to promote those types of people to occupy positions of influence in society, instead of the selfish 'greed for gold', power-hungry morons currently occupying those positions!

It's impossible to create a 'perfect world', but it's certainly not impossible to make the one we live in a damn sight better for the majority who live in ti, as opposed to a select few.

We had one until a couple of years ago (93 turbo convertible), as you say, lovely car Fliss and I still miss it (road tax was extortionate though - over £500 per annum, went to BMW 3 series diesel £20 per annum).

I seem to remember Jeremy Clarkson rating SAAB - he said that when GM took over, they recommended a whole load of cost cutting changes to the cars, which SAAB management ignored resulting in final financial collapse
