The Chinese have always regarded the State as paramount, and the individual as unimportant. They have a fairly callous approach to the individual: when I was there I visited one of the very few underground nuclear fallout shelters, and when asked why there weren't others, my guide replied that with population of the country being around 3 billion, they could easily 'afford' to lose a few tens of millions.

China also takes the long view - they think in centuries, whereas in the West we think in 5 to 10 year periods.

my brother was in china for a touring visit, as he was in japan.. he said the contrasts were huge but both were amazing places in their own way. Personally i wouldnt go to a country where the legal system is a joke and that all foreigners are followed etc.

Since the '90s the resurgence of Muslim identity and expression of secessionist movement, the CCP has clamped down heavily on the Uighurs with ruthless efficiency.
