I think you are right about Edward Jenner and smallpox.
Pasteur was more interested in a nasty milk related germ causing, er, Brucellosis. Hence the milk we drink these days is Pasteurised.
I am not a medical expert.
So many nasty germs in the World. I have seen Polio, Malaria, Diptheria, Rabies, Shingles and Pneumonia at work. You don't want to catch them.
Anecdotally, this current inter-species Covid horror has been around for years. Possibly infested Bats in South America near banana plantations, and hence the workers were at risk.
The tour guide advised social-distancing from them. They tended to a strange illness.
Bats sleep in huge groups during the day. We are talking millions here. A breeding ground for germs.
My friend came back from his tour of South America feeling very unwell 2 years back. He thinks it was Covid.
