“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

Long before he got into politics, he made a good living in the PG Tips adverts. And it's where he met his wife. Remember "Do you know the piano's on my foot?" "You hum it son, I'll play it", Cherie played the part of the broken piano.

Completely agree, and it's bullshit like that which I can't stand. All class systems do is create resentment and division, which is why I've always been totally against it. Reward should always be gained on MERIT and ABILITY, regardless of who you are/what colour you are, or where you are from.

Yeah, Tony B. Liar... That cunt's got a lot to answer for. Evil wanker, can't stand him.

The rest we're also in full agreement with. It's all wrong. If I was getting into politics, my goal would be to try and make the world a nicer and fairer place. Achieving it, even in some small way, would be my reward, as I've never been money or power-driven. I'm just not wired that way. Having an obsession with either for me usually indicates a very unhealthy form of insecurity.

For me, genuine happiness and contentment (plus good health) are worth far more than any amount of money. And the only power that would interest me, would be the power to do good and make a genuine difference to the world, by improving the lives of people who need it the most.

Those are the only reasons I'd get into politics for, but it sounds like I'd be banging my head against a brick wall.
