Indeed! However... We're back to the old 'where's the happy medium' again, as it always seems to be about ONE way or the OTHER - never the middle ground.
As much as I wholeheartedly agree with your point [and indeed consider it as fundamental in protecting our civil liberties], people also need to know how to behave like civilised and responsible human beings, rather than rabid feral dogs - and so where necessary - I'm all for drumming that into them in ANY reasonable, but forceful way, which gets the job done!
Having a healthy disrespect for authority is fine (for the right reasons), but having authorities that are often too soft or scared to 'upset anyone', in order to take decisive punitive action against those who deserve it, and therefore command no respect from the public, is no use either.
The police wouldn't take the kind of pish we've seen here recently, in the likes of Germany or Italy, I can assure you. One stern LOOK from a tooled-up member of the Carabinieri, is enough to put the fear of God into anyone!
