I agree, it’s probably 50/50 wearing/not wearing masks in Tesco at lunchtime. I started wearing one before they were compulsory, and have no intention of stopping when inside with the great unwashed, even when (if) COVID is history - I’ve not caught any cold or bug (apart from one my son brought home) since I’ve been masked up so it must do something!

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

There was and is no mandate for any card, nor was it given per se, you had to download it or ask for one. It was purely for comfort of people that felt intimidated when asked why they weren’t wearing a mask. Neither do you have to give any reasons for being exempt. You do not need any medical documents to prove you are, indeed, exempt.

The same exemptions apply in Scotland so not technically illegal not to wear a mask.

I’ve commented on this subject in Macca’s post.

The guidance says if you’re wearing a mask, it’s only effective if worn correctly

So who’s wearing the mask correctly as defined in the WHO directive? No really who on here has read this directive, and is complying 100%?

By law, everyone aged 12 and over must wear a face covering, unless exempt, in most indoor public spaces, including:

    shops
public transport services and premises, including bus stops - this includes when sitting down in a hospitality area on a ferry or train (unless eating or drinking)
    taxis and hire vehicles
bars, cafes, restaurants, nightclubs and takeaways
hair salons, beauty and nail parlours, tattoo studios and any other indoor close contact service setting
churches and other places of worship
    crematoriums and funeral parlours
gyms, leisure centres, swimming pools and indoor fitness studios
    community centres
    conference or exhibition centres
banks, building societies, registration offices and credit unions
    hotels
during a driving lesson or test (unless everyone in the vehicle is part of the same household)
    libraries, museums and galleries
indoor entertainment venues, such as cinemas, bingo halls, comedy clubs, theatres, concert halls, sport stadia
indoor leisure facilities, such as casinos, amusement arcades, soft play centres, indoor funfairs, among others
indoor places where clubs and societies meet
any indoor, or part of an indoor, public space used for weddings or civil partnership registration and as a polling station or counting votes
storage and distribution facilities, including collection and drop-off points
in communal areas and canteens in workplaces (apart from early learning and school settings), this includes tradespeople working in homes, colleges and universities, health care settings, such as dentists, hospitals, and care homes, and any other indoor setting where work is carried out
Check the face covering regulations on the legislation.gov.uk website for more details.

Other places and situations when you are advised to wear a face covering
Although it’s not the law, you are also advised to wear a face covering:

in outdoor crowded places, such as school and nursery gates and entrances
if you are sharing a car with people who are not in your household
when interacting with someone making a delivery to your home

Except they would not serve you in shops unless you had a mask or a card. So the reality was you needed one or the other.

I agree that most masks are not effective at all and people don't wear them properly anyway.

In the 18 months of personal experience not ever wearing a mask, not one shop has refused to let me in or serve me!
So in reality I didn’t need one.

our corner shop, the chemists and the market would not serve anyone who didn't have a mask or a card. When masks were compulsory. They're not bothered now.

Not really been anywhere else except the record shop - who still insist on masks even now, but they hand them out at the door.

Shops / transport etc are still compulsory here in Wales. I've actually come to the conclusion that its a matter of common curtesy.
