Yup, but league football is a *totally* different ball game (literally) to the international variety, as aside from anything else, teams are bolstered by the quality of top foreign players - and that makes a HUGE difference to your likelihood of winning things.

Plus, remember I said anytime SOON, and I stand by that, as foreigners will continue to flood the English domestic leagues for many years to come, which subsequently is likely to continue weakening the international side.

In terms of bookies, that doesn't detract from the point I've just made. The point is, as a Scot, having to listen to such biased nonsense from the media, during tournaments, especially English commentators during matches [chuntering on about England this, England that, when they're not even playing], is a major bugbear and spoils your enjoyment of the tournament.

For UK TV coverage, the channels should employ more Scots, Welsh and Irish commentators and pundits, which would then help even out the bias.

So don't watch the punditry. I usually switch over to the channel showing the match just before kick-off so I avoid all that.

And as far as fans go, the times I have watched matches in the pub the crowd have been highly critical of the team in general, the manager and certain players. Unfairly so, sometimes. There's certainly no uncritical adoration going on from the fans.

No, that's not the answer. That's a copout. The answer is to IMPROVE the quality of the punditry in the first place, and dilute English bias. After all, the whole of the UK isn't supporting England during World Cups, so commentators and pundits should always remember that.

I'm a MASSIVE and passionate football fan, so I love all the 'chat', before, during and after games - but I want to hear a bit less about England, and more about the other teams involved, when I tune in. Surely that's not too much to ask, unless the BBC is really the EBC?

Oh and ITV aren't much better either!

That's were we differ as I think football is for watching or playing, not for talking about. Although I suppose I'm talking about it now.

I think the TV just gives the punters what they think the punters want. I'd guess if they come across as being negative about England they get a whole load of complaints from nutters. I think that has actually happened a couple of times. But those nutters are not the bulk of football/England fans. IME the bulk of fans are quite realistic about the team's chance of success.

ive heard english fans complaining that their side is being talked up too much...again lol but yes the pundits do regularly get carried away with a 2-0 win v paraguay or the likes.. they also love to replay a bad call against them a thousand different ways til they get the result it was a bad decision, yet never do same the other way..

sure they aint the only ones of course... celtic do it all the time

Well, i think you'll find yourself in the minority there among the *real* fans. That's a bit like saying hi-fi equipment is just for listening to music on!

Yes, the ENGLISH punters, not neutrals. The neutrals, like me, would like some more 'neutral' commentary. Simples!

I don't think there's anything intrinsically wrong with talking up the team's chance of success. if the general acceptance is that England have no chance what is to inspire the players? They are expected to fail, they fail, no big deal. On the other hand if you aim for perfection you've at least got a chance of achieving excellence. Nothing wrong with a bit of pressure to perform well.

How does it work abroad though? When Italian TV screen an Italy world cup match does the tone of the punditry reflect the 'neutrals' who are watching? I don't know but I doubt it. Maybe for the next world cup you should travel to a country that screens the matches but doesn't have a dog in the race. China, maybe? Although you'd have to learn Mandarin first

Yes, but unlike Italy, Britain is made up of FOUR different countries, whose requirements for watching footy on TV should therefore be catered for EQUALLY.

It's rather different in Italy, and where chances are during football matches, you're preaching to converted!
