Be interesting to see how many politicians contract the virus over the coming weeks.

I seem to recall they had the same issue in WW2 with people not observing the black-out restrictions, hence the formation of the ARP and 'Put that light out!'

Also there's a psychological aspect. People don't want to deal with the fact that something so catastrophic is happening and one of the ways of blotting that out is to try to carry on as normal.

Most of us are old and used to entertaining ourselves by reading, listening to music and so on. That's what we did when we were young when there was no money, only three channels of tv. Remember how dull a cold, rainy Sunday could be? Nothing was open, you had no spare money anyway, choice between watching Highway or Songs of Praise? We developed coping strategies in those times, the younger generations have not.

Even the pubs were shut on a Sunday until, what was it, 7pm?

''In the end, it was the Sunday afternoons he couldn't cope with, and that terrible listlessness which starts to set in at about 2:55, when you know that you've had all the baths you can usefully have that day, that however hard you stare at any given paragraph in the papers you will never actually read it, or use the revolutionary new pruning technique it describes, and that as you stare at the clock the hands will move relentlessly on to four o'clock, and you will enter the long dark teatime of the soul''

The kids these days bunch of social media zombies couch potato phones glued to their ears idiots anyway, staying in won't bother them. Personally I miss my daily coffee in a café, so now just sit at home and drink it instead, no biggie I guess. Where I live the po po are forcing everyone to use the same bit of seafront, by not allowing people on the beach, and insisting people cannot travel to get fresh air/exercise/scenic walk, we have to use the seafront esplanade only, along with sweaty exhaling runners, daft as hell!

The word "boredom" only emerged with the punk movement of the late seventies. Don't ever recall hearing the word before then. And I don't recall the weather ever being so bad we couldn't go outside. Apart from "77 Sunset Strip", "The Saint", "Man from Uncle" and "Batman" I don't remember much telly. Oh and "Lost in Space" and "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea". Actually a few more titles are coming to mind, so I must have been a square eyes after all.

When I was a kid and there was nothing to do I would listen to music and sketch. I aways had paper and pencils around as T.V. was pretty awful all 3 channels of it.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”
