    Default Headphone advice.

    Hi chaps

Just wondered if the cans users here could offer some recommendations for a new pair of headphones? Not sure of budget yet as i would like to know how much i need to spend to better my aged Senn HD590's. Many thanks.

Depends on how you want to better them.
I quite like my HiFiman Sundara. They cost me €350.
I also have some Sennheiser HD540 Reference II and some HD650. The Sundara sound more neutral than the HD650.

I assume that you have a decent headphone amp?

I've not tried the hd590. I use a pair of hd600, had them for a long time, I like the sound signature and the light weight and comfort for long sessions. I listened to the hd650 when they first came out and thought they offered nothing extra over the original hd600. However I recently tried and bought the newer hd660s which give extra clarity and detail over the hd600 imho, without any trace of harshness. They are also much easier to drive with a portable dap if that's your thing. Always best to try before you buy if you can.
    Good luck with your search.

Went to a live concert in Glasgow last night. No comparison with any headphones I've ever used.

    However:

Very sharp attack - perhaps too fierce. More high frequencies. Perhaps the sound not "warm" enough. Too much detail!
Dynamic range and volume - don't try this at home.

There's no pleasing some people, is there!

I've had a set of Sennheiser Momentum 3 cans for a while now. I'm no headphone expert Steve but they sound pretty good to my ears. I don't use them via the HiFi but mostly out and about or doing the cooking to give my wife some peace and quiet! They can be wired or wireless. Maybe worth an audition locally at £350 if you can.
