Default Album Club, March, 2020: Georgia - 'Seeking Thrills'

The Album Club choice for March comes courtesy of Alex (Alex_UK) with Georgia 'Seeking Thrills'. As always, please listen to the Album in its entirety before you comment and vote.

    Georgia – Seeking Thrills (2020)

I had a few albums in mind, mainly old favourites, but I’ve decided to give my nomination this time to a new album.

I’ve been listening to the three lead singles (Started Out, About Work The Dance floor and Never Let You Go) for a while since discovering her last summer (BBC coverage of Glastonbury I think) so was very much looking forward to January’s release of the full album. Georgia Barnes is 30, a record producer, songwriter, singer, and drummer, and the daughter of Leftfield co founder Neil Barnes, which I guess is where she got her interest in music and synthesizers especially. Her self-titled 2015 debut is much less commercial, hence why I think she has only now started to get attention as this, her second album is more synth-pop than her alternative/experimental debut.

Seeking Thrills is a mixed album, with different styles and tempos, but I really like her voice and the synth sounds she produces, with some very catchy synth hooks that remind me of 80’s video games. She also seems a really down to earth performer – there’s a great video interview with her here -

I don’t expect this to be many people’s cup of tea, but I hope at least some of you enjoy it!

Marvelous choice remember listening to this when it come up on my tidal recommended and even better 2nd time round. Good voice and some sumptious basses all add up to a hit for me. Solid 9 from me and as you said 1st album worth a listen too.

Good to have a recently released album as the subject this month.

Ok so I've only listened to it once so far but when I arrived at track two I realised that I'd seen Georgia on Jools Holland and thought she may be worth a further listen.

To me it is a fresh take on a classic 80's sound that is retro without sounding dated; also puts me in mind of elements of more recent offerings by Ladyhawke, AlunaGeorge and London Grammar.

I think it will stand repeat listening and could possibly even become a favourite electro synth album.

Maybe I should really hear it a few more times before I cast my vote but after just one listen I'm around a 7 or 8 and will explore it further before I commit.
    Best Wishes
    Christopher D

Glad you've enjoyed it so far Pete and Christopher. Yes, her Jools Holland performance was very good.

Entirely new to me, and on initial play I found it delightfully upbeat: the sort of thing that would have you up and dancing. But despite the varied tempo and styles, I became bored with it. As so often, I found the synthesiser treatment of her voice tiresome.

It's not really my cup of tea, so sadly only a 6.

OK so I have listened to this album, and I have to say with some difficulty.

I am not sure why but I found it irritating but I did. Some tracks reminded me of Gary Numan riffs with aspects of Pet Shops Boys, but not done well IMO, some tracks felt like they were going to go somewhere and then didn't, which is frustrating. At times Georgia's voice had a Kate Bush feel, and Lene Lovich. As I listened to the tracks I began to realise I found her vocal approach on the songs melodically repetitive and this became tedious. I am not sure if it is Spotify(Hi-res) or not but I certainly felt a wall of sound syndrome on a lot of the tracks.

Sorry Alex, but for me I found it rather tedious and un-exciting. I actually like 80 and 90's synth/pop and synth music generally but for me this was a let down, so it just gets a 3.

Listening is the act of aural discrimination and dissemination of sound, and accepting you get it wrong sometimes.

Thank Barry and Adrian for giving it a chance! I didn't expect it to be everyone's cup of tea, so no need to apologise for not liking it!
