'£10 handed over sort of makes you fell good helping out someone in need...'

Try to look at the matter in a different way and lighten your grief: you paid £10 to have that 'sort of feel good feeling'. You may feel in retrospect that £10 was too much for the pleasure, but you have had something in return for your money,

When I have been approached [only a couple of times over the last two years, both times on the street] I've either declined or simply given the money without the least expectation of it being returned, despite the fervid asservations that every penny will be returned to me if I write down my address [no chance!]. The great difficulty is in getting them to drop the spiel that is intended to make you feel they are genuine and just state the amount they are asking for.

On the bright side - now you've had the feeling of being virtuous you can try to enjoy the feeling of indignation naturally felt by any good-hearted fellow that has had his kindness abused by a man who appeared on his doorstep and lied to him and conned him out of a tenner.

In the days when we had tramps they had a system of signs left outside or near a house, whereby other tramps could see if a particular house would give food or money to them, or warnings of unfriendliness and so on. You may, sooner or later, get another visit as the recipient of the £10 may pass on to others that your address came up trumps.

    Hi "Joanna",

I've asked you this question already, which you failed to answer last time, so could you please explain why a middle-aged man (as you said you were in your welcome thread) has a woman's first name?

Sorry to press you on this, but I need to rule out any trolling. Cheers!

    Marco.

P.S I *do* require an answer on this, if necessary via PM.

Marco: no need for PMs unless you indicate to me you'd rather communicate that way. I saw your post asking me to put my name up, but not your post asking me to explain why a middle-aged man would use a woman's name. The answer is because sometimes I prefer to use Joanna not John, just like I prefer to use make up sometimes and sometimes not. I've lived like that since my late teens. You are the site owner, and if you don't want me here, that's your decision. This is private property, your property, and I'm here as a guest and have no rights of access other than by your grace. Frankly, it wouldn't be the first time I've been asked to leave over the same issue. That said, I'll assume you are tolerant and easy going and were just puzzled. I hope my reply has allayed any concerns you may have.

Maybe I'm a softie but I think that it's always better to show compassion. Even if the person who asks for money is suspicious, I wouldn't really be any worse if I give them 5-10 euro, but this money could be very handy for somebody in reduced circumstances. Obviously I have been scammed many times, but there were times when I thought I would be scammed but was proven wrong. And it was totally worth it.

In other words the act of generosity or virtue is sufficient to itself. The money not being returned is not the point if the initial impulse was one of charity. I can't remeber the person who said it, but the goodness of the act benefits the doer regardless of the conduct of the recipient.

No problem whatsoever, Joanna or John - that's absolutely fine. AoS is all-inclusive for nice people!

Absolutely John/Joanna, diversity is welcomed here, but please don’t take any offence as there is a longstanding “thing” some of us here do making references to cross-dressing, but it is all harmless fun, we hope.

Back on topic, I’m one of life’s softies who won’t worry about a few quid for someone desperate for a fag or swig of whisky... but a few times I’ve offered them a “job” in return for decent money. Come back to my house, and spend a couple of hours gardening or cleaning and I’ll give you twenty quid. How many do you think have taken me up on the offer? Correct, none...
