Trust no one here is surely in the context of a total stranger approaching you with a story of some kind - that's how I'm reading it and responded accordingly.

In that context then, it's a case of exercising at least an initial degree of caution/suspicion, definitely / surely?

To just exercise total abandonment of any caution/suspicion for total trust seems a bit child like innocence, an ideal which for me cant be applied here on planet earth, with mankind as is.

As I say, I'm speaking in the context of ....

You finding it odd in the context outlined seems odd to me. Using ones noddle I'd expect to be standard....

You need to trust someone sometime or life becomes pretty pointless.
Not to say you should just take folk you know nothing if at face value tho.
But the old idiom, fool me once, shame on you.. Fool me twice, shame on me, is appropriate

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

All I said, quoting the post “first rule, never trust anyone” was a shit sad way to live your life. It’s a broad brush to use in any context.

Trust is always relative - if the bloke had asked Al for a borrow of £200 instead of a tenner would Al have given him it? I know I wouldn't. But a tenner is about right amount that anyone decent would take a chance and hand it over. He never comes back it's not that big a hit.

Of course mr con man knows this so he doesn't go for the big money.

£10 is £10. People graft for an hour for £10 for some git to get it free gratis.. Im sorry but there is way too many of this kind of people knocking about, vastly overshadows honest people hence you can trust no one & that is exactly what i do.

    Don’t be daft!
Of course there have been many instances of trust that gets you fucked over, and yes I’ve been on the blunt end a few times...but it’s about having enough belief that not everyone is out to stiff you...

Rule number one hasn’t been altered in my book...by the odd time of being done.
You stating Rule number one, trust no one, means what trust you once had has gone.
I just said that was a grim way to live life.

As being being utterly perfect, oh yes!, you’re a very fine judge of character sir
