    Default Sonos useless

Apparently some of the older and more recent Sonos gear will no longer get software updates, will this make them useless?

Apparently the public backlash has made Sonos backtrack https://kirkville.com/tag/sonos/

Won't be useless but won't work with software that gets updated like streaming services, if I read it right.

It's not a back track, your legacy Sonos devices will still work only as long as the streaming services don't update their software, which if you see how many times Sonos had updated due to Spotify and Qobuz updating in the last year then it's not difficult to see it won't take long for them to become merely speakers.

The 'backtrack' relates to the fact that if you have a legacy device connected to your up to date Sonos devices then they will still work, yeah that's right, because then you'll able to control everything via the newer device, just as you do now, however I'm pretty sure that legacy won't be controllable on their own.

Apple have been doing this for years, old iPhones still 'work' just don't expect to be able to install new apps or update the apps.

It's just another way, same as their trade in programme to get you to buy new kit.

Rule of thumb with me is dont use anything that relies on Software apart from your PC that is. Another thing, most Recording studio stuff is now USB, i stay clear fo that too. I stick with the old MIDI for that.

I had Souns for a bit, i hated it.

I rarely buy units that rely on software updates as they can become junk overnight.

Indeed, but DACs which need drivers can become a problem when your software on you computer updates.

Not hit that issue as of yet Neil. Fortunately. All mine use generic Windows drivers, which update if needed with Windows.
Problem is usually streaming services embedded in hardware.
I keep my streaming services in pc

An alternative is to buy devices that use open source software which have large support networks. LMS/Squeezebox seem to fit in that category for now at least.
