    A mention on £88 Million is very scary.. Cut the losses & spend the rest on a netwoork upgrade & additional Rolling stock.. You would be able to hike the speed ability with the HST which was & i think still is the fastest Diesel loco. Im sure the company who now owns Paxman can rebuild/Service those engines..

    Yeah it would definitely be more than 88 million. I think the Millennium Tent in London was about ten times that, and that was 20 years ago. In any case the money would be better spent doing up what we already have.

    Who started HS2? Hopefully the govt looks so different now they won't be losing much face.

    Well I believe it was “started” by Labour in January 2009, this Government has made a connection (sorry) between HS2 in their promises to link the North and South commercial requirements.

    But I’m not continuing any political debate.

    Not a hope in hell that we'll ever have any train in this country as fast as this one - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_maglev_train - in my lifetime that is. I've not been on it, though I've seen it, and I know people who've been on it and survived!
