It makes sense in a big country with hundreds of miles between cities, like in China or even on mainland Europe. But in the UK we don't have those distances. No point in a train that can get up to 200 miles an hour when it has to stop every fifteen minutes to let people on and off. The problem with a fast train that only connects two distant points is that it is useless to everyone living between those points. In a large, mostly rural country that is hardly anyone, in the UK it is millions of people.

I agree with much of what you wrote here.

HMG is seemingly taking a typically London oriented attitude in this - so it's no wonder that people in some of the intermediate or remoter peripheries of the country feel the way they do. OTOH, it may also be appreciated by some, as it means that they might be able to get on with their lives without worrying so much about the antics of those who purport to "run" the country. However some will feel very disadvantaged.

Another possibility is that some in government or the civil service actually want the project to fail, or be drawn out as long as possible for various reasons.

What really gets my goat is the people that stop to talk with their many aquaintances in the middle of a supermarket aisle and those dimwits that pull their trolley sideways across the aisle then reach out at arm's length to pick something off the shelves, thus blocking the entire aisle. Fuckwits

Worst of all are the big-arsed overeaters, who not only move around at half speed, but also rock from side to side like a faulty Weeble, making it impossible to get by. They also have bugger all peripheral vision, either that or they just don't give a shit.

The supermarkets should be encouraging them to get a grip by forcing them to use special trolleys fitted with wing mirrors and indicators, and something that bleeps loudly if they try to reverse, but they won't because that would alienate their biggest (literally) customers
