Have to admit there is something attractive about them:

    But I would much prefer a Studer A80 or a Telefunken M15A.

A '909' with the '707' VU's would have looked great.. Just something about the sidesways VU's thats gives me the horn

Which is why I alway fancied a Brenell STB-2 using the Mk.6 deck. (as used by John Lennon and Soft Machine)

My old Uher 'Royal De-Luxe' used those VU's.. They are well ace.. Lenon used the older Brennel i think & Ferrographs..

btw: could those Brennels be upgraded to a Stereo unit like the Ferro 6 could?

I nearly bought a Uher (Royal) machine in the late '70s.

Yes, provide the heads were changed and the Brenell Hi Fi Stereo Tape Link unit used.

This Thorens TM 1600 tape deck looks nice. Not sure how you record with it; I can't see any level meters, unless the LCD display changes to, say, two bargraph 'meters' when the record button is pressed.

It's a player, not a recorder. When they show the tape transport, you can see there's only one head.

So $12,000 and no record facility! Not for me then.

There's also the UHA Ultima machine - but boy do they look 'kitsch':
