I should try them with my old HK amp which can output peak current of 30 Amperes (for split milliseconds I guess).

It also has a very sensuous volume control (Alps "Black Velvet" FTW).

It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

The Usher S520s are described as 'bookshelf speakers'. Bookshelf speakers are designed to be placed close to a rear wall, if not placed on a shelf. Is there no way they can't be accommodated to the acceptance of both you and your partner?

Where is the rest of your system located in the room?

Bit harsh - for all you know James may like wearing the frocks My Scottish mate vouches for the feeling of freedom down there, though he would never call it a frock

Back to the OP, I can sympathise with James, I too can get weirdly attached to certain objects. I've considered selling my speakers, but the thought that I may be abandoning them without exhausting all possible ways to make them work for me makes me a bit sad
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in

Time to have a word with your better half I think and do some negotiating, or resort to bribery if necessary.
Listening is the act of aural discrimination and dissemination of sound, and accepting you get it wrong sometimes.
