Yeah, Andre, maybe a bit less of these sorts of threads, referring to folk as "sheep", and which does come across as a bit of a rant, however 'cunningly disguised'. Ta

There's still plenty of good vintage out there that hasn't been hyped up like the LS3/5a and the Garrard 401.

And there's still some very good equipment that can be bought cheaply because the general on-line consensus is that it is no good. So the 'sheep' thing cuts two ways in that it can actually benefit the vintage collector. The hyped stuff eclipses the rest and probably brings the price of the non-hyped kit down as a consequence because everyone is chasing the same ten (or whatever) items.

Okay if you wanted a cheap 401 then you're shit out of luck but there's plenty of alternatives.

It's not just the 'hype'. There's the fashion element, driven by oriental collectors. Take the poxy little Goodmans Maxim speakers from circa 1970, which are selling for around £500 now and ending up in China, Korea or Japan. You couldn't even give the things away a few years ago.

Yes they were always unwanted tat. The Orientals are welcome to them. Probably being hyped on some Japanese forums but we wouldn't know about it.

Unfortunately, those not in the know here, end up thinking there must be something special about these and waste their money on them. No doubt they can be sold on without too much penalty, but that's not the point.

I had a few sets from boot sales years ago for a couple of quid a pair and wasn't impressed even at pocket money prices.

some forums do hype, what to me isnt that great stuff, and on occasion shit stuff too, but aos rarely does. As Macca says there is lots of great gear that dont get picked up as they are not "flavour of the month" type stuff. This can be a bit like fashion. I mean who would have believed the lassies going about in black tights only would be seen as cool(99% just look rediculous) or that flares and bell bottoms would ever reappear.... cos a few folk pushed them and everyone followed wanting to be "cool"

All the better for folk who dont care about cool

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”
