    No worries

Returning to the thread topic, would anyone care to comment on the contents of this article, in terms of *who*, among our current political leaders is likely to be genuinely racist or anti-semitic: https://www.thelondoneconomic.com/ne...-n-word/10/12/

So why is Corbyn getting all the flack and not him...?

    Marco.
The first article, about the book - "could" be excused on the grounds that the views expressed are not those of the book's author, but rather those of characters inside the book. That is now a difficult one to deal with, as if, for example, an author chooses to depict a bigoted character - for whatever reason - in his/her book, then giving them "realistic" language might arguably be justified. However, this would demonstrate that the author knew such language, and was prepared to string sentences containing such words together. An author would now have to make very clear that he/she did not have any sympathy with the views of characters within such a book, and that might then transfer the onus of interpretation on to the reader. However, an author could nowadays be accused of stirring up problems if other people followed the examples of characters written about. The author could try to use a deniability argument - and it might be very difficult to prove that an author either sympathised with views of any of his/her characters, or was in any way responsble for actions taken by others after reading the book, and it might also be very, very difficult to prove that the author had any deliberate intent with respect to these matters.

These issues of interpretation are nearly always there in novels. Many authors write about people who have undesirable behaviour - murderers, renegades, bandits etc., and some do so from the view point of the principal protagonists. Murder mystery novels are not always written from the point of view of the perpetrators, though they may contain passages which are expressed that way. Are we to ban such works - which can perhaps generally be assumed to be imaginative, not representing or encouraging particular behaviours in readers? If we read a book about a "perfect murder" presumably most of us hope that the book was not intended as a blueprint for committing such an act.

The second article - if true - which I'm guessing it broadly is, otherwise there'd be denials and cease and desist notices, and perhaps even libel cases, is really depressing.

MRI scans run up to £1400 for instance (including report, etc.)

Which probably includes the cost of sedation etc associated with a scan on an animal that are irrelevant in human treatment.
