“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".
“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”
"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”
“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

I would go the Rega idea. Heavy platter is better speed stability.
Just seen this, not looked in for a while.
Dave answered it all well.
If you take the platter off there’s next to no heft to it, the plinth itself weighs next to nothing.
All the mass, stiffness and engineering is focussed on where it counts most.
Platters a heavy brute, and thicker towards the circumference for flywheel effect.
Can’t go wrong with a Rega Andre, I’d avoid the RP1 and go a bit higher up the range.
A fellow Scottish Mafia member bought one and wondered what the hell all the fuss was about vinyl.
P3 or above is where I’d be looking.
The Rega carts are good too.
Hope you and the Mrs are talking again, stressful times enough man...

The Rega P1 is a lovely turntable, especially when compared to the 'competition'. Great performance, build, reliability and Rega backup if needed. I've lost count of the number of these I've sold and all customers have been pleased and no faults.

Well ive had a conversation with the other half & she agreed to a brand new deck if i knocked the old stuff on the head.
The 'P1 Plus' would be the one if anything because of the built in Phono stage, I hate boxes hanging about and i know that old Rega 'FONO' sounded good enough. The Phonostage in the Arcam amp i have sound wank to me anyway.. If anything i don't like about the 'P1' is that thick platter. Regas only look right with thin glass platters, like i say they come up on E-Bay.
Dave do you knoe if the resent P1' would fit on the original Rega wall shelf? Are the feet attached in the place as the older models i mean?

Far as I know, yes.
If you want one, you need to be quick as Rega have closed production now. Open for today ONLY to take orders for delivery this week.
Looks like a good choice:
