    Cool Wrexham Christmas village

Just back from the (superb) Wrexham Christmas Village market, see here: https://www.christmasmarkets.com/chr...stmas-village/

What a marvellous experience, with some lovely stalls full of all sorts of locally handcrafted goods and food/drink. Picked up some nice decs for the tree, some foodie bits and I got a couple of nice bottles of fizz from English wine producer Morville St Gregory, in Shropshire: http://www.morville-st-gregory.co.uk/about-us/

Highly recommended (as they were doing tastings), and every bit as good as 'proper Champagne', but half the price!

Anyway, some pics of the market:

Last one was taken inside the historic 16th century St Giles church: https://stgilesparishchurchwrexham.org.uk/joomla30/

Great fun, and makes you feel really Christmassy!

    Marco.

Yeah most towns had regular markets back in the day. We're lucky that Wrexham has a permanent indoor Butcher's market (and fresh veg and stuff is sold, too): https://www.wrexham.gov.uk/english/b...alls/index.htm

It's nice having a wander round and buying stuff, when you have time, which you know is local produce and top quality, rather than using supermarkets

One hell of a drive from Scotland.

Bristol has quite a good farmers market, as well as a permanent indoor market, but I always seem to end up in one of the pubs next door.

We have a market in Saffron Walden every Tuesday and Saturday. I reckon, 9 times out of 10, it's chucking it down on a Tuesday or Saturday - like today. I feel for the market people.

    Hi Andy,

Nice hearing from you. I thought I'd scared you off on your Welcome thread, or were just painfully shy: https://theartofsound.net/forum/show...28#post1160728

There's lots of great things about Wrexham, not just the town itself (which of course has its problems, just like any other large town in the UK, and which really should have city status, a major bugbear of mine), but the COUNTY, in which there are some beautiful places. It's often forgotten that Wrexham isn't just a town!

I'm in Acton, near the Four Dogs, where are you?

Lovely pics marko , we are not allowed lights in our local shopping area , nor christmas trees or anything like that . Like many areas in the middle east

In the Muslim world, Christmas is not celebrated publicly, except in the minority Christian communities in the Middle East. And in North Africa not at all. To a Western Christian living there, the absence of the usual sights, sounds, and practices of Christmas, which are such a part of our culture, is most striking -- and can even be depressing. Go out into the streets and stores, but you will see no Christmas trees or decorations. Go into the homes on Christmas day, but you will not have a Christmas dinner or listen to the reading of the Christmas story, unless you are in the home of one of the few Christians. Turn on TV or radio, but you will find no Christmas programs and few if any signs that it is Christmas.

It is not that Muslims are ignorant of Christmas. Their understanding of it often leaves something to be desired, however. In North Africa, for example, it is commonly viewed as a "European" holiday. Based on what they have observed, to many it represents a big party, with feasting, drinking (and getting drunk), and similar behaviour -- very much like the pagan festival it started out to be back in ancient Rome. The Biblical message of the Incarnation, which Christians have proclaimed to be the real meaning of Christmas, does not seem to be getting through.
