Garrard 401 two spark suppressing caps advice

Hello Chaps,

I found a 401 in excellent condition but it no longer has two spark suppressing caps. As I understand it, spark suppressing caps are usually sitting across the power-switch contacts to absorb some of the electrical energy that could be generated by the switching on or off, of inductive devices (motors etc). Sparking generates airborne radio frequency energy that could be induced into e.g. expensive moving coil devices.

Can it be fixed to factory specs and how to do it?

Please advise.

I had to replace such an item fitted across the switch of one of my Thorens TD124s. I used one of these:

A series combination of a 0.05uF 400V capacitor with a 100 Ohm resistor.


A pair of these might be more suitable for your 401:

Which is a series combination of a 0.1uF 400V capacitor in series with a 50 Ohm resistor.
