The Eagles aren't AOR Barry, country rock with a hint of west coast vibe. Steely Dan are also west coast rock, or yacht rock as some call it. AOR is bands like Journey, though they started as more of a prog rock band.I have a few Eagles's recordings (on both vinyl and CD) - and I enjoy them. They are, to me, the perfect example of AOR.
I also have most of Steely Dan's output (on vinyl), I don't know why, because I'm not sure if I like them and only play them sporadically.

Lol - sorry, meant to, but got caught up with other things! It was mainly to say that there is SHED LOADS of great new music out there, if you know where to look, aren't stuck in a rut, and willing to get off of your backside to find it!
I mean, when was the last time some of you Dan fans were at a live music gig, big or small, or ventured into an independent record store in your own town to check out what's happening in the local music scene, or even used the likes of Spotify to FIND some new music that might appeal to your tastes?
If the honest answer to that is either never, or a LONG time ago, then how on earth are you qualified to judge the standards of the music being produced now, compared with that from the 'golden oldies' you so cherish and rave about, through rose-tinted specs...??

Music genres are a bit subjective at times but the Eagles fall into the country west coast vibe and not the AOR one. AOR is heavier, with lots of keyboards, harmonies and catchy tunes, ballads being a big part. Journey are a classic example of AOR. Now what Barry points at is different, album orientated rock, which the Eagles could fall under, but AOR as known these days and since the 80s means something else within rock/metal music circles.
There are though sub genres within AOR, such as pomp rock, techno rock, and some west coast bands, but not all. Like all things open to debate.

You often meet them at hi-fi shows, either as demonstrators or punters - in fact music sellers, such as Diverse Vinyl, who sell LPs and CDs at such events, deliberately tailor their stock to satisfy the demands of said, stuck-in-a-rut dinosaurs, and buyers solely of stuff that's well-produced and 'sounds good' - I know because I've spoken to Paul, the owner, and we often have a giggle about it!
