I cannot criticise anyone for genetically determined traits, and although to me it looks bizarre, have to admire those who refuse to be intimidated by others' opinions.

We are all going to suffer not only loss of pristine youth and handsomeness, to some extent, but also tend to look ridiculous for numerous reasons.

One of the contrasts which I find laughable, is old men of my age, obviously physically compromised, but with immaculate new gym kit on, especially expensive trainers.

i was always told trainers were bad for your feet, so rarely wore them. i did have a couple of pairs of american baseball shoes, that were similar i guess but had flat soles. they were quite rare at time and ok, but i preferred shoes like dm's or a nice pair of brown/black semi formals. Only track suit i had was when I played badminton

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Yes, some folk have difficulty with 'self image' and just don't understand how others see them.

Your baseball shoes were probably Converse 'Chuck Taylor' All Stars. I had a couple of pairs in the late seventies. Not especially cheap, about £30 a pair, which was probably £100+ in today's money. Still quite popular today, but a bit more of a budget brand, and can be had for about £40.

Agree about trainers, don't own any, but have had 'skate' shoes which also have flat soles (usually Vans) for the last 30 years. Always have a couple of pairs on the go

    You have four feet?

Personally, I wear whatever I want and couldn't give a toss what anyone else thinks about it. (Note to self: must book in my second haircut of the year).

That's fine, but surely you'd have to concede that the hairstyles illustrated all look ridiculous? If you've got a large bald patch in the middle of your head, then the last thing you want to do is accentuate it, by allowing the hair around about it to grow long?

That would be akin to a big bald patch being in the centre of your lawn, and just ignoring it, allowing the grass to grow long all around it, which would be just as unsightly.

*You* might not care how you look, but your wife or partner might think that you look like a right tit, but are too kind to say, so consider them!
