All this is a perfect example of the notorious AoS thread drift!

Actually I have a full head of hair, and my wife would be the first to tell me if I looked a right tit! When I start to look like Michael Heseltine, I know it's time for a trim.

I know, I've seen the pic you posted... And I'm glad you've got an honest wife. Mine would do the same, and frequently does!

I just don't know how some folk can go around looking so ridiculous, with laugh-out-loud hairstyles, especially when they're on TV! I'd rather be completely bald than look like a tool. Mind you, I've often found that 'boffins' display little concern for their personal appearance.

Science teachers at schools were notoriously always the worst dressers!

The 'long-haired genius' look probably started with Einstein. Genius and eccentricity often go hand-in-hand; so that some are so preoccupied with their mental activities they pay no regard to their appearance, or have no real interest in what they eat of drink. Scientists tend to be the worse in that regard, but some philosophers can be just as bad.

....and often tend to be single - that's the other crucial factor!

IME, many single men 'of a certain age', regardless of being 'boffins' or not, care little about their appearance, almost as if they've lost their self-esteem/self-respect. You always dressed well and took care of your appearance even when you were single, but I bet you'd agree that Happy has still been influential now in how you look

In terms of long hair, some guys can carry it off really well (in a ponytail) *IF*, and it's a BIG IF, they have thick, clean, shiny hair, and are under the age of 40. If those crucial boxes aren't ticked, however, then they can end up looking as stupid as the 'Friar Tuck' brigade!

I think it pre-dated Einstein by several decades. 'Long-haired' musicians, for example Liszt, and artists, were a staple joke of Punch cartoons in the 1880s/1890s. See, for example:

Maybe they have enough self-esteem/self respect not to care what anyone thinks about their appearance?
