Leeds based and fairly new to the hifi world. Looking to invest in a half decent system. Recent music purchases include Thom Yorke, Agnes Obel, Dope, Stanley Brinks.

Intrigued by the Rega sound and looking for some advice on where to best to focus my funds, along with some potentially silly newbie questions, like do I need equal length speaker cables?

My first big decision (for me) is that I've been considering a Rega Brio amp and need to source a good cable match.
Using B&W shelf mounted speakers, the left would require a 2 meter cable, the right speaker due to running under the floor would require a 7 meter cable. Do these need to be the same length as each other and would 4mm copper cable be ok (Rega Duet) or should I be looking at 6mm (ie: Van Damme HiFi)?

Next consideration would be speakers, any mid range recommendations for paring with a Rega Brio?

Any forum member input would be greatly appreciated.

They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

    Hello Ben. Welcome to AOS.

The Brio R has been popular with members. You could start a thread in the Blank Canvas section and outline your ideas, I'm sure you'll get opinions.

It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

    Welcome to AoS Ben.

You don't need to use equal cable lengths: in your case the difference in length between 2m and 7m is quite large, but manageable. The biggest effect will be with the dissimilar damping factor offered by the amplifier to the two speakers. 4mm2 cable ought to be fine, but 6mm2 would be better.

    Enjoy the Forum

Hello Ben and welcome to AOS.
The Rega Brio is an excellent amp but in the price range has good competition from the Audiolab 6000A and the Cambridge CXA60 (which I’ve owned for the last 2 years) which having been recently updated to the CXA61 (at an increased price) can now be had for £500.
I’d avoid having vastly different speaker cable lengths if possible for reasons of channel balance and damping factor. You don’t mention what your music source is, vinyl, CD, computer based digital or streaming. If you’re primarily digital then you will need a DAC with the Brio, the Audiolab and Cambridge have digital inputs which is more convenient. Are you sticking with the speakers you have or are you planning a change ? If you’re after a very good sounding pair of small speakers I can recommend the Q Acoustics Concept 20, I use a pair in my second tier system.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions and for recommendations you’ll get plenty of response on here.
Nice to hear from another Yorkshireman, I’m in (unfortunately very wet) Rotherham, so not far away from you.
