    Default Sony Ta-F770ES - What's it like?

Seen a few of these around, prices seem to have fallen to the £400+ mark, with built in phono stage. I'm wondering how it would compare to my current set up - Quad 909/Croft micro, with a G Slee Era V phono stage. Figure in a trip to a hifi repairman to check it all out - postage of course adds to all this.

Never heard the quad but I used a 700es for 4 yrs and was very happy with, the phono stage on these is good too.

I bought one a few years ago and it was a reliability nightmare, having to be overhauled twice, before I gave it away. These things are fiendishly complex and when working properly are clearly good, but I really think your current setup would be better (and more reliable).

Stick with what you have. Not everything 'vintage' is good.

May'be not worth it then? Would like to hear one though.

    Yup,

I had a Sony XXXES integrated and it was great, until it wasn't. Two repairs later and a large upgrade to the Firebottle Monoblocks rendered it surplus to requirement.

If you want a top quality integrated, get on the Sansui 919 or above. I have heard a few of these and they all impress but I do think moving from your current rig will be an absolute shock to the system. It's certainly night and day in terms of dynamics and tone.
