'Flu is not just the common cold but worse -it's utterly debilitating for at least 3 days. To not have one when offered is selfish. We need to get the figure up to near 90% of at-risk patients for 'herd-immunity' to kick-in. Similarly, and perhaps even more important, is a measles jab. The advice I was given was that it's no good saying 'I had it in my childhood' so must be immune. One must have been infected at least twice and had the result confirmed by a path lab. One's GP's opinion based on the symptoms is no longer regarded as being good enough. Please disregard entirely the fake-news of the ignorant anti-vaccers.

although it is good to use hand gel , it may not stop flu , flu spreads like this :

The flu virus is contained in the millions of tiny droplets that come out of the nose and mouth when someone who is infected coughs or sneezes.

These droplets typically spread about one metre. They hang suspended in the air for a while before landing on surfaces, where the virus can survive for up to 24 hours.

Anyone who breathes in the droplets can catch flu. You can also catch the virus by touching the surfaces that the droplets have landed on if you pick up the virus on your hands and then touch your nose or mouth.

Everyday items at home and in public places can easily become contaminated with the flu virus, including food, door handles, remote controls, handrails, telephone handsets and computer keyboards. Therefore, it's important to wash your hands frequently.

You can catch flu many times because flu viruses change regularly and your body won't have a natural resistance to the new versions.

Exactly; its genome is RNA based and not DNA. RNA is a single helix- unlike DNA and not as stable. Thus its mutation rate is so much higher.

Just as important to remember is that there have been scares recently for avian and pig 'flu variants crossing the 'species-barrier' and this infecting us.

Believe me...prevention is better than a possible cure (or death).

In the last month I've had MMR, Rabies and Hep B and C jabs. Earlier: pneumonia and shingles. Why take any risks?

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

By all means have jabs if you need them and they're unquestionably beneficial, but don't become a hypochondriac .

I'm 54, and the only jab I've ever had in my life was a BCG, when I was a teenager. I'm almost never ill, take no forms of medication whatsoever, and my doctor doesn't know me.

" Not quite sure who you're referring to, Richard?"

    Not here Marco; heaven forbid!

No - on many 'social' media sites--full of ignorance.

(I'm not a hypochondriac...many of the jabs I've had this year is because I had to go to S India for 3 weeks. -mind you I'm laid-up in bed now with man 'flu!)

Ah, that makes sense! Never been outside of Europe myself, but if I were going to somewhere like India, I'd be jabbed up to the max!

Social media? Mostly full of wankers, so I simply don't use it.

At the end of last year I became very sick with Influenza A, pneumonia and viral complications. I was in hospital for 6 weeks, much of it in intensive care. I ended up with severe heart damage due to myocarditis, having had no previous problems with blood pressure or heart disease. I am still "recovering" from this episode, from which my consultants did not think I would survive.

My message is to get your flu jabs if you are 60 or over (I was 59 when this episode occurred). We underestimate the serious of the "flu" in this country. It is a potential killer even for the relatively young in good health.
