New member intro

Hi all, this is my first post on the AoS and a little bit about me and my interests. Been into Hi Fi for 40 years or so, my first wage packet was spent on hi Fi , the normal for the time, pioneer cassette deck, Nikko amp, Rank Domus speakers ! and Rotel turntable. Fast forward 40 years now Kef speakers, oracle turntable/ sme v, and Quad 909 / Croft pre. The cassette deck is gone.
Apart from hi fi normal interests, fishing, shooting, cars and motorbikes,and too little time to enjoy them all fully

I had to get the motorbike first to get to work. I am sure the hi Fi shop I went to could have sold me anything, it all sounded good to me and in those days the more knobs on the amp the better, or that’s how it seemed to me. How times change.

I remember my first amp was an Eagle, bought from Littlewoods catalogue.

Couldn't afford speakers, so a cheap pair of headphones had to do.

When I had enough money some Wharfedale Linton XP 3's speakers I think.

Source must have been a turntable maybe Pioneer PL12 D.

Looking back on that first system the amp was not bad , the cassette deck ok, the speakers were a bit iffy. Most of my mates had the pl12d with the shure 75ed cartridge

Ah the Nikko amp - now that takes me back to the mid '60s; being impressed by the cosmetics of the first Japanese amplifiers that arrived to these shores. Solid turned metal knobs, unlike the 'toothpaste cap' knobs used on most UK gear at the time. You have move on a long way since then.

What are your tastes in music?

Barry you are right re the Nikko the quality of them and the likes of Yamaha, which I always wanted,was streets ahead of the presentation of the British offerings of the time. How they sounded was probably a different matter. It was a bit like the Japanese motorbikes of the 60s.
Musically there is not much I don’t like, been listening to early, 1920s and early 30s, blues recently but the recordings do not test your hi Fi ! I like 70s and 80s rock and have been looking to get a pair of ATC speakers to get a bit more low down than my present speakers.
