Default WTB: Pre-amp to suit Sugden Masterclass

I am looking for a stop gap active preamplifier to drive a Sugden Masterclass amp. I hope eventually to find a used Sugden Masterclass pre-amp however they are thin on the ground. The only pre-amp I have to hand is a Quad 34 which is a poor technical match as the output voltage is too low as well as being rather sonically restrained.

The matching Sugden LA-4 pre-amp has the following specs so something with similar specs would be ideal.
    • Input impedance: 50k ohms (single-ended), 25k ohms (balanced).
    • Output impedance: 600 ohms (single-ended, balanced).
    • Input sensitivity: 100mV for 1V output.

I only need two inputs and balanced operation would be great but not essential.

Budget is under £500 (preferably well under) and needs to be something that can be moved on quickly when the time comes. So I am looking for something that is reasonably well known and not too quirky. Look forward to seeing what is out there :-)

Advice here for anything is usually a Croft ... but I would suggest looking for a Monrio Asty (solid state) if you can get hold of one. Though if it's a genuine stop gap I'd be on a hunt for anything reasonably well made with a little bit of gain.

A passive probably won't cut it with the Masterclass as its 1V sensitivity suggest an active preamp is called for.

There is a Haffler kicking around not sure if here or PFM that would do nicely I'm sure.

I’ve got a Debden DM20 preamp that should be a sympathetic match. It’s in excellent working order & is in unmarked condition. I’m looking for £400 inclusive & it shouldn’t be too hard to move on when the time comes.

I take it you mean Densen DM20? Seems a fair price at that.

There's my MF box in classifieds as well? MM stage, quiet, plenty of gain, well reviewed, nd minty condition. (Shameless plug )

    Hi Tom,
I picked up Jazid's MF. Its an almost exact match impedance and sensitivity wise (to the matching Sugden pre) so will allow me to test the Masterclass amp. It was also in perfect condition and James is a gent to deal with
