Stick to Lidl (or Aldi) in future, daftee, for the majority of your groceries

I might do if they delivered. I do get the odd item in there (I can walk to my local Lidls, usually pass the place a couple of times a day) but don't find it cheaper across the board plus they waste a lot of space with their centre aisle products so can't carry the same range of products as the others.

But still a good deal cheaper. Someone gave me a voucher for £10 off if you spend £40 in Lidls so I'll give them a try.

Go for it, Roy. We do around 80% of our shopping there, and you know me when it comes to quality food and drink! Just don't expect to see the usual big brands, and be willing to experiment with their equivalents.

Things to look out for:

*Anything* of German origin, food or drink, especially Pils lagers. Italian or French wine, especially from the 'wooden crates' nearest the checkouts (stuff over £6 a bottle).

Their fresh produce (fruit, veg, free-range chickens and meat), *if* the suppliers they use near you are good.

*Anything* from their Deluxe food range, fresh or frozen.

*Anything* from their Italiamo Italian food range. *Anything* from their French-week promotions.

Chocolate, especially that from Ritter Sport.

The many interesting tools and gadgets, stored in their 'middle isles'.

Things to avoid:

ALL ready-meals, as they are truly cack!

Brown sauce or English mustard.

Some of their most basic cheaper brands (of anything).

Can't really think of much else!

It simply depends on what you buy.

We buy LOADS of fresh fruit and veg, primarily because Del is veggie, but also because I love veg and we both eat lots of fruit. And if we buy the same stuff in the likes of Sainsbury's, it's considerably more expensive, especially more 'speciality' items such as celeriac, purple-sprouting broccoli, asparagus, fennel, spinach, etc, and nice varieties of apples, strawberries, various berries, etc, when they're in season, and also fresh herbs (such as basil), which we can't grow in our garden.

Fresh meat is also much cheaper in Lidl, especially the likes of Aberdeen Angus steaks, and lamb, and especially free-range chickens (as we don't buy battery-reared cack), and the quality is just as good as that found in the likes of Asda, Tesco or Sainsbury's. I could go on, but it as I said it largely depends on your shopping habits and how much you reply on big brands

There sauces ain't great. Aldi's brown is edible. There tomato is just about edible.
Stokes stuff is best but expensive, so if on budget you need to use a cheaper one. Heinz is OK too. Especially the low sugar one

Well I'll certainly make use of this voucher to do my 'big shop', this will enable me to check the prices of the products against my usual weekly online Asda shop.

I just find getting my groceries delivered so convenient, preferable to having to actually go to the supermarket (more so now the weather's got cold), jostle for position with people trying to park their massive SUVs in the car park, mess about getting a trolley (I've never got a pound), spend an hour looking for that one product they've moved (usually due to seasonal aisles) then queue up behind the lovely old dear who's paying for her shopping with her penny collection. Oh and remember to take carrier bags.

Well, the clue's in the name, daftee! Why would you expect a substitute, from a GERMAN store, for a quintessentially English product, to be any good?

Aren't you retired mate, and so can go to supermarkets at the quietest times, thus avoiding the majority of the 'great unwashed'? That's what I do. I usually go when Del's at work, and certainly around here, Lidl is near-empty at the likes of 10.30am on a Tuesday morning.

I always keep a Pound coin in the glove compartment of the car, for trolleys. Not difficult... Similarly, carrier bags are kept in the boot. It's called being organised!

I get the "convenience" of having stuff delivered, but as long as I remain able-bodied, I'll be doing all my shopping, physically, in store. Plus, I like to 'mooch around' and see what interesting things there are, for spur of the moment purchases, which is pretty much how I shop - just buying stuff that takes my fancy there and then, which you can't really do online.

I only make lists for basic essentials

never do lists. just go in and get what i want/need/afford etc. but when weather is poor i dont go out; ie cold as my lungs cant take it etc

I don't think you'll see Marco on night buses!
