Might have been an aftermarket item - I fitted one to my Mk 2 Escort, they were popular in the 80s. Maybe there's a bloke out there (probably called Derek) who dreamt that he fitted one to his Ital, then sold it to some bloke in Stoke.

What a rubbish dream that was, now, Austin Princess is where dreams are made. Well actually not really, only if you couldn't afford a Ford Granada, preferably a 2.8i Ghia X...

I remember me and my brothers trying to convince my dad to get an Austin Princess (or might have been the 'Ambassador by then, same thing really) but he reckoned it would cost too much in petrol and bought a Metro instead. The HLE 'economy' version. Tight as a duck's arse.

I googled 'Austin Princess' last night (apparently they were mistakenly called "Austin" Princess.) Well what else would you call them? Answers on a post card. I was looking to see if the Princess had a facility to 'talk' to the driver, but could find no mention of that. Perhaps that was also something I dreamt. Maybe the Princess was a victim of some BL boffin's mischief who used the aforementioned subliminal advertising technology to make the car say "Don't buy me, I'm shit".

It was the early Maestro and Montego models that talked. Although being British Leyland it would go faulty very quickly and got on people's nerves and so they discontinued it.

There were a number of cars from Austin/BMC/BL that wore the Princess name, including the rare Rolls Royce powered and rather desirable 'Princess 'R', shown below.

As for the Morris Marina, it was actually a home mechanic's dream, as it was so simple mechanically. Built with tried and tested components like the 'A' Series and 'B' Series pushrod engines and leaf sprung rear axle, which were bulletproof. The design and performance were old school and derided by many, but the cars would keep going economically with no bother at all if maintained properly. They were rust prone though and the front wings would rot through above the headlights within 18 months from new.

That model of Princess used a four litre six cylinder engine, that found its way into early Jensen sports coupes as I recall.
