Puzzle solved. We had to wake up/get up early (well, earlier) today, as have internal work scheduled - smart meter installation. Scheduled for any time between 8am and 5pm. So of course we got up just in time. Now we're expecting a phone call about 4.55pm saying that the team is running late, and will either come after 5pm, or reschedule!

No - that hasn't happened yet - let's hope it all works out OK

What was the puzzle was the alarm setting on the clock - which we don't normally use. It's a portable alarm clock - really neat, which folds up for travel. I found a battery and got it going a few weeks ago, but didn't set the alarm. Last night I tried to set the alarm to 7.30am. Successfully, I thought, except that when I set it back to run mode it clearly displayed 8.30.

The alarm did go off at 7.30 as desired - well not actually - but it got us up, but then I noticed the clock was showing 8.31.

    Finally the penny dropped!

Smartmetres are a waste of money and time, IMO. When I changed energy supplier, it is no longer any use as a smart metre and it's more difficult to read than a standard metre.
