    Default Boot sale 2019

It’s been a good day today at the boot sale. Picked up the following vinyl in absolutely mint condition for 50p apiece. Haven’t seen records at a bootsale in such good condition for a long time. Whoever owned them looked after them very well.

    Mozart Divertimenti – in B flat, K.186; in F, K.253; in E flat, K.289, and Adagio in F, K.411

The Netherlands Wind Ensemble, cond. Edo de Wart. Philips 6500 003 (1969).

    Mozart – Horn Concertos: No.1 in D Major, K.412; No.2 in E flat Major, K.417; No.3 in E flat Major, K.447, and No.4 in E flat Major, K.495

Soloist: Dennis Brain, Philharmonia Orchestra, cond. Herbert von Karajan

    EMI ASD 1140 (1954)

Mozart – Piano Concerto No.22 in E flat, K.482, and Concerto Rondo in D Major, K.382

The English Chamber Orchestra, soloist and conductor Daniel Barenboim

    EMI ASD 2838 (1972)

Brahms – The Four Symphonies; Tragic Overture and Academic Festival Overture

The Philharmonia Orchestra, cond. Otto Klemperer

    4-record set HMV SLS 804 (1972)

    Franz Schubert – Octet in F Major, D. 803

    Vienna Chamber Ensemble

    DG 2531 278 (1981)

    Chopin – 12 Etudes, Op.10, and 12 Etudes, Op.25

    Tamás Vásáry, piano

    2-record set, DG 2721 208 (1965)

Vivaldi – Four Concertos for a Solo Woodwind Instrument

Concerto in A major, RV 461; Concerto in E minor, RV 484; Concerto in C minor, RV 441 and Concerto in D, RV 427

Leo Driehuys: oboe, Marco Costantini: bassoon and Severino Gazzelloni: flute.
    I Musici

    Philips 6580 152 (1960)

    Thanks James,

I have the K.412, K.417, K.447 and K.495 performed by Alan Civil with the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, directed by Neville Marriner on vinyl (Philips 6500 325 (1972)), but I regard Dennis Brain's recording as being definitive Mozart Horn Concerto.

There was a fab R3 programme a while ago getting forensic about the horn concerti. I was fortuitous in hearing it as I went to work. Civil came up as did many others, but I fell for Brain's easy brisk rendition and indeed it was their favourite too.
Strangely I grew up with a recording my parents had but have no idea what it was... Not that it was better or anything, just it was my introduction to Mozart in a family with parents of Beethoven (and Sinatra) persuasion.

Today I picked up another vinyl copy of Sinatra at the Sands, in very good condition for £1.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

    It's on Warner Reprise (Reprise K 64002 (1966)), so I don't think it's an original.

Not that successful today. Only bought a 'coffee table' photo book on Blues artists: "Blues - Keeping the Faith" by Keith Shadwick. ISBN 1-86160-325-5 (2000). Hardback, originally costing £30, but picked up in excellent condition for £1.

It is a useful biographical reference book on the lives of over 300 Blues performers of the last century.

That’s a nice find, Barry, wouldn’t mind it myself.
