I have chosen this, for the simple reason I like it. Edie Brickell may not have the best of voices; lacking emotional range and strength, but as with Bob Dylan, it is the poetry of the lyrics that attract me. Whether this is due to help from her husband (Paul Simon) or not, I don’t know, but all the tracks have something intelligent to say.

Hope you enjoy it, but regardless if you do or don’t, please say so and vote.

I know this album very well, been playing it on and off since it came out in the late eighties. As you say her voice isn't particularly musical but it does have a very appealing naturalness about it. I've always thought the first track is the best and it does sort of write cheques the rest of the album can't quite pay but none the less it's a great listen. I like the easy going nature of the songs and I do like to listen to it while on a long drive. I've given it 8/10 but the first track alone is 11/10 for me. Great choice for the relaunch.

Quite familiar with this album (and her later albums). Definitely like listening to her catchy lyrics and melodies. As mentioned her voice is not the last statement in musicality, but she does have a natural ease which is addictive. Some of the later tracks on the album seem thrown together. She only met Paul Simon in 1988 (married him in 1992) so I suspect it is her later albums that were influenced by him.

    Overall 7/10 - but some tracks 9 or 10.

Not my cuppa tea really. The voice isnt great, and tunes hark for me to the punk era. After saying that, there were a few tracks i liked ok.. 2nd and last especially. I doubt I'd buy it but enjoyed the listen.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

I remember this being released and hearing it many years ago the first time. What I recall at the time was thinking it had a similar feel to Rickie Lee Jones but with a much more rocky feel than with RLJ.

The first track is great from a production pint of view and very catchy and definitely a 10/10

Track 2 was inspired by her fascination with actress Edie Sedgewick. Lyrically most of the tracks are personal observations and reflection on experience, a trait in songs that I like.

I don't really get the punk era comment earlier, it certainly does not sit in that genre as far as I am concerned, if anything it has soft Folk/Jazz/Soft Rock leanings. For her first album at 22 years of age it is certainly pretty good, some of the musicianship on it is pretty good and a well balance production IMO.

My feeling is that most of the tracks are personal experiences and feelings about broken relationships, desires and loves lost and found. I think some might find it self-indulgent or perhaps naive, but I think that is the point of the album its a young woman's reflection of herself. Perhaps not everyones cup of tea, but I think it definitely is worthy of 8/10.
Listening is the act of aural discrimination and dissemination of sound, and accepting you get it wrong sometimes.

I remember the first track, its been a while since I last heard it, great song. I also really enjoyed and rated tracks 2, 3, 9 and 10.

Some unremarkable tracks in the middle for me though takes the score down to a 7/10.

Bit of googling on the band and a tragic end for the keyboard player Carter Albrecht. Had a skinful and kicked off with his girlfriend. When they got back to hers she ran inside and locked him out. He then went round her neighbours house and kicked off banging on their door in the early hours. The neighbour shot through the front door hitting him in the head, ....

    No charges were brought. RIP.

This album and the artist completely passed me by at the time and I’m slightly ashamed to say that I only found this album when former Spice Girl Emma Bunton released a cover of “What I Am” and rather liking it, found the original. It’s an enjoyable album, and I’ve revisited it a few times over the past couple of weeks in view of Album Club, but it has never really grabbed me and made it a “must play”. 7 out of 10 from me.
