I was just swotting up on it - Options for the (also R-2R) Analog Devices AD1865 and Philips TDA1541A are for those untroubled by a CD/Redbook ceiling - which optional chip did you use, the default of any of the R-2R's?

Just checked with Gary at Elite Audio where I bought it and he confirms it will be the Burr Brown chip as that is the only chip they ordered them with. Well actually two of them in dual mono configuration.
All of the chips used are R2R but only the Burr Brown is suitable if you play files over and above Redbook, as mentioned in your quote from Darko's review.

perhaps worth mentioning that this can be upgraded to the S3 spec for 1200 (S3 is 3400 retail) - as an S3 owner I can't overstate what a phenomenally good DAC this is - unbelievable musicality/sense of rhythm - a real opportunity for someone

Thanks for that Mothersky. It really is very good. If anyone is interested it is worth reading some of the reviews online, especially the Darko review.
