Because sandpaper can be used either wet (for a very smooth finish) or dry (giving a coarser finish); hence " wet and dry".

Ha - well, I've never used it that way. Only dry, to buff rough edges down on wood, so a new one on me!

To be fair, the "black stuff" is usually called 'emery paper', the "yellowy gold stuff" 'sandpaper'.

Aye emery rock was used. Not sure if it still is but using it with a fluid allows eventually a mirror finish. Just use finer and finer paper.

Now, emery paper I've certainly heard of. Not used it, though. Never had cause to do so. In terms of the 'black stuff', I was imagining black-coloured sandpaper, and thinking 'WTF'?

You can appreciate now why I didn't 'get' the earlier weather reference to 'sandpaper'.... Not exactly clear.

When I was at school, if you asked our woodwork teacher for “sand paper” he sent you out to the long jump pit with a piece of paper and some PVA glue to make your own. He said there was no such thing... now, Mr Bumphrey is long since gone, and I have no idea if he was right or not, but he would happily give you a piece of glass paper...
