They say, “ignorance is bliss”, and there is something to that. If you’ve ever had to endure the company of the less fortunate, you realize they are completely unaware that they are not smart. Being smart is only important to smart people.

I simply couldn't function without peace and quiet. The world today is so 'noisy', for all sorts of reasons, and people are always stressed out and shouting at each other, screaming kids, etc, all of which for me stands out like a sore thumb when entering the 'real world', and I'm forced to leave my tranquil repose at home, where the noisiest thing I'm exposed to is the purring of my cats...

A time and place for everything. I go play music and make all kinds of noise! I find that the louder we play, the more fun it is! Perhaps this is a primal reaction as well? We do try not to ring our ears, but on rare occasion we slip a little.

But after doing so, the peace and quiet of home is that much more enjoyable, a bit of ying and yang, striking some balance in life.

Oh yes defo, I should've stated music, aside! I *love* playing my favourite music loudly, in the car or at home [and I live in a detached house, so I bother no-one]

No, what I'm talking about is the ever-increasing levels of 'ambient noise' in today's aggressively loud world, mobile phones constantly bleeping, greater levels of traffic and industrial noise, yapping dogs, screaming kids, and worst of all stressed out, ill-tempered people shouting at each other, continually having arguments - *that* kind of noise...

It's an alien world to me, and feel uncomfortable being exposed to it, as aside from any noise I choose to create, such as when listening to music, my home environment is one of calm, peaceful serenity!

I agree! I just spent 6 days on the 9th floor of a hospital. Right smack in the middle of the city. 24 hours a day, 3 am or 3pm was no difference. It did quiet down about midnight, right after the nurse’s shift change. As I lay in bed, trying to sleep, I could hear 8 or 9 conversations going on. Young nurses having conversations about boys, patients talking to nurses, TV sets going, but when it got fairly quiet, if I listened very far away, you could always hear someone screaming. A sad reality in the hospital. The gentleman in the bed next to me was a half wit, schizophrenic. Apparently he was drunk and hearing voices, so he fell down the stairs and broke his arm, jumped in his truck to go to the emergency room, and wrecked the truck, breaking his leg and a huge hematoma on his brain! His stupid mouth never stopped, hoards of doctors rallied around, plying him with ice cream to tell them all about his schizophrenia. Oh! And the beeping! Constant beeping and alarms going off! It was maddening, I was never so glad to leave anywhere in my life! The first two days at home, I never turned on the radio or tv, I just laid here in silence, loving every minute.

Many of course would just want a place to live, a job etc.

    No good answer for all
I recall back in Psychology Class, some guy named Abraham, ( I think?), had the levels of wants, I forget the classy name they gave it. But it was something like, the first thing we want is air! Next is water, then food, then shelter, then sex, and so forth and so on. A man with no food is not concerned with shelter or sex, a man with no air is not concerned about food. The list continued, but that was the gist of the lesson. Seemed rather obvious really.

Maslow's 'hierarchy of needs'. We covered it in A level Economics, more years ago than I care to remember. It seemed rather obvious to me, too, but then so did almost everything we studied in Economics..

That’s it! Your memory is far better than mine. Abraham Maslow, I thought they made too big a deal of his writings, because, as we said, it’s so obvious.he just happened to be the first to write it down.

So, I suppose once all of his needs are met, peace and quiet follow close behind? Although there are people who love the city! They love the hustle and bustle of city life, they love New Years Eve in Times Square! But, I suspect that at some point, even they need a moment of peace and quiet to collect themselves?

So back to the topic of this thread, the three things that are most important, while peace and quiet will eventually be important for everyone, will it make their top three? And does it become more important with age? I suspect that 25 years ago, my answers would have been much different.

I've always preferred peace and quiet to noise and bustle. Maybe because I grew up in a crowded house with five other people, where it was hard to escape their noise (usually my two sisters arguing with each other).

Once I've ticked the 'obvious' boxes (food, drink, shelter), books, and somewhere quiet to read them, probably top the list. I could, at a pinch, even manage without music, if the choice came down to one or the other.
