The problem with poverty measures these days is that the left have normalised the use of relative poverty. So while most of the worst off have roofs over their heads, plenty to eat (safe to assume since obesity is rife amongst the unemployed) their children have games consoles (which I could only have dreamt of in my youth despite both parents working) etc, they are still classed as living in poverty as their incomes are low compared to the best off. Basically in a capitalist economy you are guaranteed to have high poverty levels without near communist levels of taxation and redistribution. This is obviously great news to those on the left of centre as it justifies their pet policies, and any questioning of the measure is seized upon as being evidence of a dangerous extreme capitalist. Rather like other definitions of racism, sexism etc where they have also shut down sensible debate.
