    Hi Wayne

You snagged a pair of legends there, have heard this pairing on a number of occasions, I suspect you may have possible the only set in the UK or at the very least possible one of!

None I know of are here in the UK that I have come across There is a very special set up in Belgium which belongs to an ex employee of Pioneer Europe, even has a pair of the first Pioneer speaker made as well plus a whole Aladdin's cave of Japanese exotica , the other at Koj-san's in Osaka.

Congrats on acquiring them They will bring you many happy hours listening

Erm, yes the Pioneers are that good, they are a phenomenal cost no object design that knock out 60w per channel in class A (so double as room heaters!). Thing is with speakers at 104db they rarely get over 0.3w in my small listening room!

    They weren't cheap either in 1980-84 - http://www.thevintageknob.org/pioneer-M-Z1.html
I assume you have listened to the avantgardes with other amps, the reason I ask is I visited a member on wigwam with avantgarde duo and he used kronzilla valve amps with huge valves, can't remember the output, probably 40w, but they sounded far better with my 2A3 and 300B amps. I wonder if you don't get the best out of the amps at such low output, bit like driving a Ferrari in a 20mph limit every day. Lovely kit though.

Cheers Tony, good to know I’m not the only one who appreciates this fine set of components from Pioneer. It’s clear that at some point they just went for it, and threw everything at producing something esoteric and fine sounding. Love to hear this lot with a classic pair of 2402s.

I’ve tried all kinds of amps to be honest, not exhaustive obviously but a variety of approaches. I always go back to class A power, and like Avantgarde themselves, usually to something solid state too. They also sounded fab with Pass Alephs too.

Proper looking equipment. Such a shame that high end these days is all silver and gold bling with those nasty blue LEDs.
    Current Lash Up:

    TEAC VRDS 701T > Sony TAE1000ESD > Krell KSA50S > JM Labs Focal Electra 926.
