An extremely good and very cheap upgrade for the 405-1 is to replace the LM301A with TL071 op amps. The LM301a's are socketed, so the change is easy.

The TL071 is itself a pretty basic op amp. The OPA134 is much better. http://www.ti.com/product/OPA134#

The TL071 is a major improvement over the original chip. I tried various other chips including Burr Brown ones, and these were difficult to tell over the TL071.

Lovely amp Nick, surprised it's still here .... Bargain.
Future classic, and prices rising steadily.

Agreed, I bought my 405 new in 1976 and have taken care of it, the one shown seems in similar condition.

Thanks guys - I’m surprised it’s still around too. I would hold onto it if I could!

Price reduced to £215. (Anyone know how I can edit my post to change the price?)
