Since some the most recent fires of historical buildings have occurred whilst they were being refurbished, renovated or repaired, one wonders if there is a causal connection - and if there is, then perhaps the relevant H&S practices and regulations need re-evaluating. I'm thinking in particular of the use of high power work lights.

More likely to happen if it is being refurbished. But that's all supposed to be risk-assessed nowadays. They don't seem to have had any sprinklers or fire-suppression system and based on what I've seen so far they've done a piss-poor job of trying to put it out. At least if they had got it out faster they could maybe save the stonework.

I think all the fire and emergency services in France are regarded as being part of the military, and as such are neither well paid, nor can strike.

The damage will be catastrophic. Any kind of repair and restoration will take generations.

The huge scaffold that had been put up for the repairs must be a couple of hundred feet high. It will now be weakened by the heat and the clamps will have loosened. It will be a hell of a risky job taking it down, if it doesn't fall down of its own accord. I certainly wouldn't want to work on it or anywhere near it.

It's just been reported that a French businessman has pledged 100 million Euros for restoration. That'll get things started.

We visited about eight years ago, and Mrs. Pony said to me "That's terrible, do you think they managed to save the Mona Lisa?" And I thought I had a shit memory.
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in

T/T: Inspire Monarch, X200 tonearm, Ortofon Quintet Blue. Phono: Project Tube Box CD: Marantz CD6006 (UK Edition); Amp: Musical Fidelity A5 Integrated.
Speakers: Zu Omen Def, REL T9i subwoofer. Cables: Atlas Equator interconnects, Atlas Hyper 3.0 speaker cables

    T'other system:
Echo Dot, Amptastic Mini One,Arcam A75 integrated, Celestion 5's, BK XLS-200 DF

    A/V:
LG 55" OLED, Panasonic Blu Ray, Sony a/v amp, MA Radius speakers, REL Storm sub

Forget the past, it's gone. And don't worry about the future, it doesn't exist. There is only NOW.
