Another interesting article, by one of the EHT team, which delves more deeply into the scientific analysis of the images of the black hole.

    https://astrobites.org/2019/04/11/th...-a-black-hole/

Amongst other fascinating items, it hints at variability of the black hole environment over the period of a week that the data was gathered.

Figure 2 (Figure 11 in Paper IV): Fiducial images on each day of observations from each imaging pipeline. A consistent asymmetric ring feature is recovered by all pipelines on all days, with hints of time variability along the brighter southern edge.

I saw the images yesterday and a colleague said that he thought it must be a joke of some kind as the image wasn’t very exciting

    He was right.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

There was an interesting programme on BBC4 about this last night - no doubt available on iPlayer. Got me a bit confused as they spent a long time fiddling with the data until it produced a consistent image. Left me wondering if different algorithms would produce different images.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”
