Default The Event Horizon Telescope - photographing a black hole

Big "groundbreaking" announcement today from the international project whose goal is to provide the first ever direct images of a super-massive black hole.

Handy 4 minute background video ...

Basically, a number of radio telescopes around the world operating at a wavelength of 1mm have been meshed together to create a telescope the size of our planet. With this, sufficient detail should be available to provide an image of what is happening around the central black holes in our own galaxy and also the giant galaxy M87.

    Could be amazing.

Watch the press conference today live at 1300 GMT. https://www.nsf.gov/news/special_reports/blackholes/

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

... that image is of the Super Massive Black Hole at the centre of the giant elliptical galaxy M87.

As far as I know an image of the SMBH at the centre of our galaxy hasn't yet been released.
Both were the subject of the EHT project.

Here's a photo of the whole of the M87 galaxy taken at optical wavelengths.

There is a relativistic jet of material coming out of the galaxy - at about the 2 o'clock position on the photo - probably expelled by the central black hole.

    Yes, it looks like it.
Much detailed analysis to do I am sure, to check the images against the precise predictions of general relativity.
But certainly looks good so far.

Shame Stephen Hawking didn't live quite long enough to see this.

That is a shame as he had so much input into understanding black holes and the event horizon.

So, what are we seeing in that black hole image?
